Time Lapse Plan Sketch

One of my recent tech gadgets to be added to my collection is a new iPad Pro 12.9”.  Pair that with a new Apple Pencil (2nd Gen), the Procreate app, and my love of drawing floor plans and you’ve got a whole new way to get creative.

Everyone around me was a bit shocked when I decided to branch out into the iPad world.  See I’m a PC and Android (Samsung) type of girl all the way.  Part of that is simply because that’s what I’ve always used almost exclusively.  Well except for that photography class I took in college that required me to work with the Mac computers in the lab.  (Talk about a learning curve.) Probably the main reason for my preference is the operating system. I tend to be a bit stubborn and don’t appreciate being told how to do things in someone else’s specific way like Apple does.  PC & Android give you a little more freedom to work the way you want. Plus some of the software I use doesn’t work the same on a Mac. I don’t like toolbars and windows floating around all willy-nilly. The latest system update on the iPad is getting closer to the better file management that I prefer.

All that being said, I’ve been using Procreate to create digital plan drawings that I’ll share with you from time to time.  This first one is for a new project I’m working on.

Typically when developing a design for a remodel, the project starts out with drawing the plan of the home as it is currently built.  This usually involves sketching out the entire layout of the home (or the area to be remodeled) on paper to get a beginning floor plan.  Measurements are taken for room sizes, windows, doors, details, etc. That sketched plan is then drafted digitally in AutoCAD and modeled in 3D using SketchUp.

For this project I decided to start out with a digital sketch on the iPad instead of using paper and pencil.  Using Procreate for this I’m able to easily adjust parts as needed and add separate layers for notes and measurement.  One fun part about creating this digitally is that Procreate records the process into a time lapse video.  Check it out below…

Follow this project…

As this project progresses I’ll take you along for the ride.  I look forward to sharing behind the scenes glimpses into drafting the floor plan, modeling in 3D, construction documents, presentation, design concepts, and so much more.  I’m working on a hashtag for social media to make it easy to follow along for this particular project. I’ll keep you in the know on that.
